Explain the difference between sound and electromagnetic waves, by stating the type of wave and medium through which the wave travels.
The difference between sound waves and electromagnetic waves is sounds are transmitted as a compression wave which means that the sound needs to travel through a medium where the particle is able to vibrate. Sound waves also cannot be transmitted through vacuums because there are no particles to be able to push closer together or further apart. Sound is transmitted at a greater speed through liquids and solids as the particles are bound more closer together. Electromagnetic waves can cause a static, they are formed when an electric field couples with a magnetic field. The magnetic and electric fields of an electromagnetic wave are perpendicular to each other and to the direction of the wave. Electromagnetic waves can travel through the vacuum of outer space.
Explain what the Cochlear Implant is, how it works
A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. Cochlear implants may help provide hearing in patients who are deaf because of damage to sensory hair cells in their cochleas. It replaces the function of the damaged inner ear, it provides signals to the brain.
Investigation Question: Investigate and outline how the following careers involve using and understanding sound energy.
Audiologist- An audiologist is a health care professional who evaluates and also diagnoses people who have a loss of hearing etc. They work on newborns, children and also adults. They use advanced technology and procedures to assist someone with a loss of hearing. This career involves and also understands sound energy by examining the clients ear and testing how the ear reacts to sound, they also see if sound is being transmitted properly to the client.
Acoustic engineer- An acoustic engineer works with sound and vibration, they are concerned with the design, analysis and sound control. They monitor sounds and vibrations by looking at the noise level being created. The primary job duties as an acoustic engineer is to reduce unwanted sounds in populated areas.
Audio engineer- An audio engineer is concerned with the recording, manipulation, mixing and reproduction of sound. They usually us technologies to produce sound for film, radio, television , music and anything sound related. They deal specifically with the technical and the mechanical aspects of music and sound.
